Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) operates under a Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) and periodically updates its academic scheme. Each scheme defines the subjects, credits, examination pattern, and evaluation system for all B.E./B.Tech. programs across affiliated colleges in Karnataka.
2022 Scheme (Current): Applicable to students who enrolled from the 2022–23 academic year. This is the most recent scheme and follows Outcome-Based Education (OBE). It features 8 semesters over 4 years, with 50 marks for CIE and 50 for SEE in each subject. The minimum passing criteria are 40% in CIE and 35% in SEE independently.
2018 Scheme: Applied to students who enrolled between 2018 and 2021. Similar in structure to the 2022 scheme but with some differences in subject names, credit distribution, and elective offerings. Students under this scheme sit for VTU exams under the older question paper pattern.
2015 Scheme: The previous CBCS scheme, now followed only by backlog students completing remaining subjects. This scheme had a slightly different evaluation pattern and subject structure compared to the newer schemes.

How VTU Syllabus Is Structured — Complete Guide
Each VTU subject under the 2022 CBCS scheme is divided into 5 modules. Each module covers a specific set of topics and typically carries equal weightage in the question paper. Understanding this structure helps you plan your preparation more effectively.
For most subjects, the SEE question paper has two parts — Part A with short questions covering all modules, and Part B with descriptive questions where you must answer one question from each module. This means you cannot skip any module entirely — each one will appear in the exam.

1st and 2nd Semester — Common Foundation
All engineering branches share a common first year. Subjects include Engineering Mathematics I & II, Engineering Physics or Chemistry (one per semester, often branch-dependent), Elements of Civil Engineering or Basic Electrical Engineering, Engineering Graphics, and a programming course. Engineering Graphics is frequently underestimated — it builds spatial visualisation skills used throughout engineering. The 5th and 6th semesters introduce Professional Elective Courses and Open Elective Courses. Open electives let you explore subjects from other disciplines. Minor project work often begins in the 5th or 6th semester. 7th and 8th Semester — Major Project & Graduation
The major project spans 7th and 8th semesters. This is the most significant individual academic contribution of your entire degree program. Choose a project topic that is industry-relevant and technically substantial — AI/ML applications, IoT systems, embedded systems, automation, or renewable energy are consistently strong choices. Campus placement drives occur primarily in the 7th semester. Mandatory Non-Technical Courses
The 2022 scheme mandates several non-technical courses across specific semesters: Constitution of India (understanding Indian governance), Environmental Studies (sustainability and ecological awareness), Universal Human Values and Professional Ethics (workplace ethics and value systems), Kannada Kali (for non-Kannada speaking students, as Karnataka's state language), and Indian Knowledge System (IKS). These subjects carry fixed credits and must be passed to earn the degree. They are generally considered less demanding than core engineering subjects but must not be neglected.
VTU Credit System & Grading Scale Explained

Credits: Each subject is assigned credits based on its weekly teaching hours. A 4-credit theory subject means 4 lecture hours per week. Lab subjects carry 1.5–2 credits. Total credits for a B.E. program typically range from 160 to 175, varying by branch. Credits are the weights used to compute SGPA and CGPA.

SGPA Formula: SGPA = Sum of (Credits × Grade Points) / Total Credits that semester. A consistent SGPA of 8+ across semesters gives you a CGPA above 8 — which opens doors to top placements, scholarships, and competitive graduate school applications.
Passing criteria under 2022 scheme: Minimum 40% in CIE (20/50) AND minimum 35% in SEE (≈18/50). Both are independently evaluated. Failing either — even with high marks in the other — results in failing the subject. Students who fail CIE cannot appear for SEE and must repeat the entire subject in the next exam cycle.
CGPA on your degree certificate: Your final CGPA is printed on your degree certificate. It is the first number a recruiter or admissions officer sees. Industry benchmarks: 6.0 minimum for most IT companies, 7.0–7.5 for top product companies, 7.5+ for competitive MS abroad applications, 8.0+ for most scholarships and exchange programs. Start strong and maintain consistency — it is far harder to recover from a poor start than to maintain momentum.

Many students skip reading the syllabus and dive straight into notes. This is a common mistake. The official VTU syllabus document lists exactly what topics are examinable — which means anything not in the syllabus will not appear in the question paper, and anything listed in it could appear.
